Urban Timber Reclamation

Our environment can become sustainable using New Urban Forestry Reclaimed timber

In addition to tree care, New Urban Forestry actively seeks to provide reclaimed and salvaged wood to the industry. Using salvaged timber reduces the demand on new timber and is an environmentally responsible means of managing our natural resources.

Lumber

All of our lumber is derived by environmentally friendly methods. New Urban Forestry salvages logs removed by reputable, local arborists and municipalities. City trees are under a significant amount of stress due to their environment, thus producing unique grain patterns and desirable colors, also referred to as “figure”. Our grades of wood are referred as grade 1, 2, and figured. Click Here to see our inventory of lumber FOR SALE

Some Woods Available

Black Walnut - Rich dark brown heartwood and nearly white sapwood. Moderately heavy, hard, strong, and stiff, with good decay resistance and dimensional stability. Works very well with machine or hand tools. Sands easily and finishes to a velvety, natural-colored sheen. Walnut is quite hard and durable – resistant to dings. Used for high-end cabinetry and furniture, gun stocks, decorative panels and veneer, interior millwork, novelties, carving, turnery, clockcases and musical instruments.

Elm - Light brown to brown heartwood, usually with a reddish tinge, and light-colored sapwood. Moderately heavy and hard, tough, elastic, difficult to split, and wear resistant. Steam-bends very well. Low decay resistance and moderate dimensional stability. Used for furniture, flooring, coffins and turnings.

Hard Maple - Nearly white sapwood, sometimes with a reddish tinge and light tannish heartwood. Heavy, hard, strong, and stiff with moderate shock resistance, low decay resistance, and medium movement in use. Harder Maples sometimes have a distinctive grain, and can be sawn in special ways to emphasize that grain. Used for high quality flooring, high quality furniture and wood turning.

Maple Figured - Harder Maples sometimes have a distinctive grain, and can be sawn in special ways to emphasize that grain. Birds Eye Maple is a premium piece of maple that has small circular grain patterns, among the regular grain. Curly maple is another premium piece of maple that is cut to show the patterns of light and dark. It is often used in musical instruments (like the back of violins). Regular pieces of maple may have occasional hints of the curly or birds eye features.

Northern Catalpa - Straight grained with light grey-brown or buff-coloured heartwood and light cream-colored sapwood (most lumber consists of heartwood). Soft, weak and brittle with very good decay resistance and dimensional stability. Used for millwork, framing, forms, furniture, drawer sides, and general purpose construction. Also good for turned articles and carving due to softness and stability.

Red Oak - Light reddish tan heartwood and narrow, almost white sapwood. Hard, strong, stiff, and strong with moderate stability in use and little natural decay resistance. Used for cabinets, furniture, millwork, musical instruments, flooring, turnery, boxes, caskets, pallets, heavy construction, and many other applications.

Black Oak - Looks very much like red oak and has many of the same qualities. Looks more red, and larger rays.

Soft Maple - Wide, creamy white sapwood and beige or tan-colored heartwood. Moderately heavy, hard, strong, and stiff with low shock resistance and decay resistance, and medium movement in use. Soft maple is about 25 percent less hard than hard maple, has medium bending and crushing strength, and is low in stiffness and shock resistance. Used for furniture, interior millwork, toys, novelties, turnery, musical instruments, crates, pallets, flooring and furniture framing.
